Dr. Sabine Levi is a renowned expert in the study of GABAergic synapses and the molecular aspects of synaptic transmission, utilizing cutting-edge single molecule imaging techniques. Awarded the Integrative Physiology prize by the French Academy of Science in 2009, her research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in synapse development, pruning, and plasticity. Her team investigates both inhibitory GABAergic and excitatory glutamatergic synapses in the hippocampus, moving seamlessly from molecular studies to animal behavior. They employ advanced techniques such as Quantum Dot-based Single Particle Tracking (QD-SPT) and super-resolution STORM/PALM nanoscopy to explore membrane dynamics and synaptic organization at the nanometric scale. By integrating pharmacological, genetic, and imaging approaches, Dr. Sabine Levi’s team tests the functional impacts of their findings in vivo, examining synapses and neuroglial interactions, as well as animal behaviors related to memory, social interactions, anxiety, and epilepsy.
